ABDO Management & Leadership Training in demand

Friday 1 May 2020 will see the first cohort of students commence their online studies for the new ABDO Management & Leadership Training – leading to Chartered Management Institute (CMI) qualifications.

Among them will be James Brooks, clinical support technician at Allegro Optical – an independent, family-run practice based in West Yorkshire. James recently received his ABDO College Optical Assistant qualification after achieving a pass rate of 90 per cent.

James said: “The ABDO College Optical Assistant course has given me solid foundations to pave a long and successful career in optics. One which I’m very much looking forward to.”

Sheryl Doe, Allegro Optical managing director and dispensing optician, said: “James is really looking forward to starting the Level 5 Management & Training Leadership Diploma with ABDO next month. I’m hoping he’ll be able to teach me a thing or two when he’s finished.”

Commenting on uptake of the new ABDO MLT courses, Nick Walsh, ABDO sector skills development officer, said: “It’s great to see so many people like James signed up, especially under the current circumstances. We have seen employers investing in their teams as well as people self-funding their personal development. All highly commendable.

“The beauty of these courses is not only that they cover key areas for anyone in management or leadership roles, but also that they are delivered 100 per cent online,” Nick continued. “This reduces the need for time away from work – a major consideration when designing the courses. This has also been the main factor in the courses launching and proceeding as planned, now that people are unable to travel or meet in groups.”

During the first year of the new offer, the courses are exclusive to ABDO members. This has seen many practitioners joining the Association in order to partake in the courses. “I’m sure that they will get much more from their membership going forwards, Nick said.

The 24 people in the first cohort of the year will soon also benefit from membership of the CMI as part of the package allowing for the continuation of personal and team development.
Applications are now open for the second intake in September. This course will be the Level 5 Certificate: Continuing Improvement, which will be spread over three months. Assessment will be in the form of a written assignment for each unit with no exam.

The subjects studied and assessed on this course are:
• Principles of Delivering Coaching and Mentoring
• Principles of Developing a Skilled and Talented Workforce
• Managing Quality and Continuous Improvement

“These subjects form important skills for any leader or manager who is looking to get the most from their teams and therefore their business,” added Nick.

The application deadline date is Friday 21 August and the course commences on Monday 7 September.
