What is COP?
In November 2022, Egypt hosted the 27th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP 27), with a view to building on previous successes and paving the way for future ambition to effectively tackle the global challenge of climate change. A breakthrough agreement was signed on a loss and damage fund for vulnerable countries. You can also find a report on outcomes here.
COP, or conference of parties, is a global meeting, aiming to get agreement from countries worldwide to cut emissions to keep a 1.5 degree increase in global warming within reach, along with goals to mobilise finance, assist developing countries and work together.
The COP26 summit brought parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A new global agreement – the Glasgow Climate Pact – was reached at the COP26 summit. It aims to reduce the worst impacts of climate change – but some leaders and campaigners say it does not go far enough. Read this BBC news report from after the event.
