GOC seeks new DO council member

ABDO is encouraging members to consider applying for a new dispensing optician (DO) vacancy on the council of the General Optical Council (GOC) when the tenure of DO Glenn Tomison ends on 31 December 2022.

The GOC is also seeking to appoint a new lay member to its council to replace Rosie Glazebrook when her tenure also comes to an end at the end of the year. The lay member will have expertise in audit, risk and finance.

The roles will involve exercising oversight, ensuring effective corporate governance, and making high-level policy decisions. Council members will also be required to operate strategically and impartially, listen, communicate, and influence effectively, exercise judgement, and inspire confidence and support amongst stakeholders.

Dr Anne Wright, GOC chair of council, said: “I would like to warmly thank Rosie and Glenn for their time, contribution, and dedication to supporting our work to become a world-class regulator.

“Becoming a council member is an exciting opportunity to work with fellow members, both lay and registrant, to lead on the GOC’s mission to protect and promote the health and safety of the public and patients, maintain public confidence in the professions, and shape the future of optical regulation.

“We welcome all applications from across the UK but are especially keen to hear from candidates in Northern Ireland to maintain fair representation from the devolved nations on our council.”

The deadline to apply is 2 October 2022.
