Launched in 1994, the annual Silmo d’Or awards celebrate talent and creativity within the industry – and over 28 years have become much coveted.

The categories this year are:

  • Vision
  • Low vision
  • Sport
  • Children
  • Technological innovation in eyewear
  • Connected products
  • Sunglasses ‘brands and labels’
  • Optical frames ‘brands and labels’
  • Sunglasses ‘eyewear designer’
  • Optical frame ‘eyewear designer’

Nominees include big industry players such as Rodenstock (BIG Norm), De Rigo (Philipp Plein VPP081) and Shamir (Shamir Metaform) as well as smaller boutique brands like the UK’s Kirk and Kirk (Thor), Rolf (Joey) and Woodys (Neon-G).

The 29th Silmo d’Or Awards are presided over by jury president, Jun Gobron. Born in Namibia to a Belgian father and a Japanese mother, Jun graduated from the Free University of Brussels with an economic sciences degree before becoming an interior architect and designer. He honed his creative sensibilities at Brussel’s École supérieure des Arts Saint-Luc.

The Paris show, taking place from 23-26 September, will also reveal the winner of the inaugural Optical Design Contest, introduced to showcase future designers. The contest was opened to all students enrolled in a design course at a level equivalent or above third year post-baccalauréat in July, and the nominees can be viewed on the Silmo website.
