New members for ABDO’s National Clinical Committee

After successful interviews, the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) is delighted to confirm 3 new members of the ABDO National Clinical Committee (NCC). The committee is the driving force behind the association’s clinical policy and direction.

The new committee members are Ruth Shelton, Tony Harvey and Tony Douglass.

Ruth Shelton qualified in 1995 and has worked for large multiples, small chains and independents in a variety of roles. Explaining how she became more involved in the profession, Ruth says, “I read an article explaining why DOs should get involved with their Local Optical Committees in order to be part of the conversations around decisions being made within Optics. I have been a Regional Sub Lead for a while now and will soon be the treasurer of my LOC. All of my recent involvements with the Association have been positive and beneficial. I want to be useful and will deploy my energies where ever they’re needed.”

Tony Harvey qualified in 1979 has held a succession of management roles within Boots Opticians. He is now Franchise Partnership Manager and a member of the GOC Registration Committee. He says, “I have always been interested in the provision of clinical care in optical practice, and currently, I hold the role of the Clinical Lead in Boots Opticians Franchise.  I have always felt that I should give something back to the profession that gave me a very fulfilling career, and I believe that I can contribute to the NCC with the breadth of experience that I have.”

Tony Douglass’ career in Optics started in the 90s with Dollond and Aitchson before he moved on to Specsavers. He is currently Dispensing Optician Training Manager within Specsavers’ Professional Training Department and a probationer examiner for ABDO. He says, “I am passionate about dispensing, and feel that the NCC agenda items are very much related to my day job.  I have a lot of experience of working in Optics and a good network of connections, so I well placed to help with information gathering and putting together reports. I am very interested in developing the role of a DO, to open new pathways /development of the career ladder.”

Commenting on the appointments Barry Duncan, Deputy Chief Executive said, “We are delighted to welcome the three new committee members to the NCC. Each of them brings a wealth of experience and knowledge having worked in different areas within the optical profession. They will raise the profile of the NCC and compliment the skills and expertise of the members currently involved. I am confident their clinical and practical knowledge will further advance the committee activity in the coming months.”
