This is an exciting opportunity to extend your scope and contribute to the development of the ophthalmic dispensing profession. We are seeking two dedicated and highly motivated individuals to join our team of teaching staff at ABDO College in Godmersham, Kent. The College delivers a range of programmes for the optical profession using blended and distance learning approaches. Our programmes range through Access, Diploma, Degree, Advanced and Honours, leading to ABDO examinations. ABDO College has an impressive reputation for high standards and exemplary pass rates.
The role
You will play a vital role in ensuring ABDO College is best placed to serve the needs of our students and stakeholders. The successful applicant will be enthusiastic about all aspects of ophthalmic dispensing and be able to effectively use their knowledge, skills and experience of best practice to contribute to the theoretical and practical skills teaching in all elements of the ophthalmic dispensing programmes as well as carrying out associated administrative tasks. These will include designing high quality teaching materials for delivery in small and large group teaching sessions, marking work and carrying out auditing processes. An ability to communicate complex information, meet deadlines and IT literacy are essential for this role.
Comprehensive training will be given and you will be assigned to a personal mentor from the College Academic team who will support you throughout the academic year. Typical working hours for full-time college lecturers are 40 hours a week, sometimes including one or more evening sessions. You will be required to work extra hours to plan and prepare lessons and mark students’ work, especially during term time. Applicants will be expected to undertake a teaching qualification if not in possession of one and the fees for this will be paid by ABDO College.
Your qualities
The individual we are looking for will:
- be an experienced, GOC registered dispensing optician, contact lens optician or optometrist
- demonstrate an ability to teach a wide range of theory and practical subjects
- have excellent interpersonal and time management skills
- be both self-motivated and demonstrate an ability to work well with others
- be required to relocate if not living locally (temporary accommodation on site)
Salary
A competitive salary package of between £25k and £45k dependent on relevant teaching experience.
