Norville Optical have released their 2020 Reactolite brochure which makes interesting reading.
Reactolite resin is Norville’s latest contribution to the world of photochromic lenses. Utilising the very latest chemical technology advancements, Norville is able to combine the photochromic process and anti-scratch coating into one high performance and great value product. Reactolite® photochromic lenses offer leading activation darkness, as well as fast fade-back times. Fully activated lenses will block up to 85% of visible light under typical daylight conditions, blocking over 99% of harmful UV rays.
Available in both grey and brown, Reactolite® lenses are clear indoors, offering similar optical clarity as Norville’s regular lenses. Norville’s unique photochromic system utilises a combination of photochromes to provide the best possible colour in any situation.
Whether British overcast or Spanish sunshine, Reactolite® lenses have the ideal performance to match all conditions. The Reactolite® technology is achieved via a photochromic multi-coating stack process.
The Reactolite® photochromic coating stack is applied to both the concave and convex sides of the lens. This is advantageous as it allows the colour change to occur simultaneously on the front and back side of the lens.

Norville can trace their spectacle making origins directly from 1898 when F Norville, the founder, opened his newly commissioned shop at 7 Barton Street, Gloucester, with a sign above the door watchmaker, jeweller and manufacturing optician. The loss of his only son F.H.Norville in 1917, in France, was a huge family setback as he had been working to succeed in the business. Fortunately a grandson, F.C.Norville, was ultimately directed, pre-WWII, into manufacturing optics who then, in 1947, returned to Gloucester from managing a M. Wiseman & Co London lens factory to set up his own optical prescription manufacturing company. This was happily coincident with the start-up of the National Health Service supply of free spectacles.
The Norville Optical Company has had its ups and downs over its 70 years in business, adding and then shedding a Gloucester spectacle frame mass production unit, a glass lens mass production factory in Cardiff and a CR39 resin coating venture. However, optical engineering and production machinery remained key to its core business in all the years of spectacle manufacturing. Today F.G.Norville, the fourth generation, co-ordinates its Gloucester hub spectacle laboratory with smaller prescription laboratories in Bolton, Seaham and Edinburgh. The Company now has 247 employees and annual sales of 12m.
The positive side of the Company is its ability to produce and deliver state of the art spectacle lens designs, matching any of those of other international players. This is achieved utilising specialised free-form resin and glass lens production, hard coating, tinting and vacuum coating. All the facilities required of a comprehensive Rx house supplier. Meantime the original High Street shop focussed on spectacle sales and now has 10 opticians’ locations around Gloucestershire and Bristol city.
