On Monday 3 October, ABDO hosted the second SEE Summit on the Environment – and those who couldn’t attend can now watch a video of the event on YouTube.
The event began with an inspiring video, provided by Millmead Optical Group, highlighting the potential for change and showcasing the artwork made from lens waste that Millmead is collaborating on with sustainability designer, Yair Neuman.
ABDO president, Daryl Newsome, provided further inspiration in his introductory talk, highlighting the pressure the world is under and providing context for the need for change. This was followed by an educational talk from Thiago Gentile of Plannet Zero, providing the inside take on carbon foot-printing.
Munish Datta, director of sustainability for Specsavers, then took viewers through the company’s sustainability strategy worldwide.
A Q&A session allowed participants to pose questions to panellists: ABDO sustainability campaign lead, Antonia Chitty; researcher from the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare Rosie Hilson; Jayne Abel, sustainability lead for the Optical Suppliers Association; and Sukie Woodhouse whose practice has the dual accolade of a Gold Award from ABDO’s Thinking Green campaign alongside the Green Mark. Topics discussed varied from recycling packaging and lenses to eco friendly lens and frame options.
ABDO vice president, Kevin Gutsell, rounded up the event – thanking all who took part. He urged everyone to take action, and use the resources supplied on ABDO’s SEE Hub to ensure that the optical community makes positive changes together.
