A new referral system and digital patient record has come top in the Excellence in Glaucoma Care Awards.
Cardiff and Vale University Health Board’s primary care optometry and secondary care glaucoma teams won, together with Wales national architect for eyecare digitisation, Gareth Bulpin.
The scheme sees optometrists with extra qualifications in glaucoma assess patients and upload images and results to the NHS electronic patient record. Consultant ophthalmologists review the images and decide on next steps. Patients don’t have to wait for a hospital clinic appointment and are seen close to home.
IT expert Gareth, who came out of retirement to lead the project, said “This work is saving the sight of the residents of Cardiff and Vale, it’s that simple.
“As a patient myself, I understand the trauma of lost sight,” added Gareth, whose left eye was affected by a stroke.
Runner-up was Rashmi Mathew, consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital. She was nominated by several glaucoma patients for outstanding care and kindness. One said Ms Mathew had boosted their confidence: “She takes the time to assess your personal needs and gives attention to any concerns that are raised.”
Rashmi said: “For my patients to nominate me has been a real honour.”
Nominations for the 2023 awards are now open for individuals or teams from any field of glaucoma care. Find out more here.
