Former home secretary David, Lord Blunkett, will be the keynote speaker at Deafblind UK’s conference next month.
Standing Out and Fitting In takes place online on 3 October. The free event will bring together individuals, professionals, and organisations dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for deafblind people.
There are over 450,000 people living in the UK with dual sensory loss today and numbers are growing. By 2030 there could be as many as 600,000. The charity hopes to raise awareness of their unique experiences and the barriers they face.
Delegates can expect to find out about best practice and innovative strategies. Lord Blunkett (pictured right) will talk about how society needs to change to create inclusive environments. HSBC senior accessibility manager Chris Bailey will focus on collaboration between the public, private and voluntary sectors.
The creator of the Mixmups TV programme, Rebecca Atkinson will talk about combining sight and hearing loss with a successful career in children’s media. Mirko Bauer, president of Deafblind International (pictured, above) will introduce the charity’s global education campaign.
The charity’s chief executive, Nikki Morris, said: “We believe that every deafblind person has the right to fully participate in society, and this conference is an opportunity to highlight both the challenges and successes within the community.”
