Vision Care for Homeless People (VCHP) is seeking volunteers to support clients who lost out during Covid lockdowns when services were halted.
Clinics in cities across the country need qualified optometrists and dispensing opticians to offer a little of their time.
Helen Harms is VCHP volunteer operations manager, leading the drive to get services up and running.
She said: “So many homeless people are unable to access the eyecare service they need and we are striving to change that situation for the better. Making a difference to those people’s lives, and being able to work with volunteers who are so giving of their time, is hugely satisfying.”
Just a few hours would make a difference, added Helen. “Volunteering at VCHP clinics around the country is a talking point amongst many students, but we are keen to reach out to those in practice who find they have a spare half day once a month. If several volunteers each offered a few sessions a year we would be able to run a regular service for homeless people.”
The charity needs support in Birmingham, Brighton, Exeter, Gloucester, Leeds, London and Manchester.
