Low vision CET e-bundle launched

Dan Williams of Visualise Training and Consultancy has launched a three CET point e-learning version of his Seeing Beyond the Eyes CET Roadshow for dispensing opticians and optometrists.

The Seeing Beyond the Eyes bundle has been designed to help eyecare professionals in clinical and non-clinical roles better understand and support patients with low vision, and enhance accessibility and inclusion within practices and clinics.

Dan, who has been registered blind since the age of eight, developed the accredited course to help eyecare practitioners provide more accessible services and make referrals to vital support services. He explained that he had visited numerous eye hospitals and consulted a variety of eyecare professionals over the years – providing him with “a first-hand understanding of what is missing in terms of holistic support for patients”.

Dan explained: “I remember on several occasions, optometrists would talk in medical jargon without informing me of my eye condition in terms I could understand. They would call my name in the waiting room and then walk off. I saw practices with poor colour contrast, witnessed professionals talking to family members whilst ignoring the patient, and many other non-inclusive issues.”

The Seeing Beyond the Eyes CET roadshow has trained more than 5,000 optical professionals and Dan now wants to reach more staff to ensure patients with sight loss receive accessible information and timely referrals to support services.

“Optical professionals are highly experienced in the anatomy of the eye and experts in lenses,” Dan continued, “but there is a big knowledge gap in understanding visual impairment and how it affects people on a daily basis. The more optical professionals learn, the more people with sight loss will be empowered with the knowledge they need to move forward as is they who are generally the first point of contact in a person’s sight loss journey.”
