Q&As with the ABDO Board

It’s about giving something back, says Saima

In our third Q&A with ABDO Board members, Saima Begum talks with Dispensing Optics editor, Nicky Collinson…

Q: Can you tell me a bit about your career so far?

A: I’ve had a diverse career so far, wearing different hats in both independent and corporate settings as a dispensing optician (DO). From hands-on roles to management positions, I’ve always thrived on the dynamic nature of the eyecare industry.

Currently as a locum, I have the privilege of stepping into various practices, immersing myself in the diverse facets of our field first-hand. Each experience brings new insights and enriches my understanding of our profession.

Education has always been a cornerstone of my career. Currently, I proudly serve as an ABDO practical examiner and an ABDO distance learning tutor, guiding aspiring DOs through their training journey. Witnessing their growth and passion for the profession is truly rewarding, and I’m honoured to play a role in shaping the future of our field.

Beyond my roles within the optical community, I am the founder of Self Belief Network, a transformational coaching practice dedicated to supporting individuals on their journey. Through bespoke coaching sessions, I have the privilege of helping professionals unlock their full potential and achieve their personal and professional goals. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see individuals thrive and flourish under my guidance.

I’ve also been actively involved in developing workshops and programmes aimed at enhancing the soft skills and knowledge of professionals and individuals alike. This hands-on approach to education reflects my belief in the power of continuous learning and growth, both personally and professionally.

Balancing these diverse roles with my responsibilities as an ABDO Board member requires meticulous planning and a deep commitment to making a meaningful impact in every capacity. Whether I’m coaching professionals, tutoring students, or advocating for the interests of our members on the Board, each role complements the others, creating a dynamic synergy that keeps me engaged and invested in the advancement of our field.

Q: What inspired you to put yourself forward to become an ABDO Board member?

A: Well, it’s all about giving back. Having soaked up experiences in various facets of optics, I felt a calling to contribute on a broader scale. The chance to represent members’ interests and help shape the future of our profession was a compelling motivator.

Q: What are your special interests and how do they fit in with your Board member role?

A: I’ve been deeply involved in training and management throughout my career. This aligns seamlessly with my role on the ABDO Board. I believe in fostering an environment where members can continuously learn and grow, ensuring that our profession evolves with the ever-changing landscape.

Q: What successes have you seen during your tenure so far in terms of progressing the interests of members?

A: It’s immensely satisfying to witness progress that directly benefits our members. From advocating for professional development opportunities to championing initiatives that elevate the standards of our field, every step forward feels like a collective victory.

Q: What is the level of commitment involved and how do you balance this with your other roles?

A: Being an ABDO Board member does require dedication, no doubt. Balancing this responsibility with my other roles involves meticulous time management and a passion for the cause. The key is understanding the impact our decisions can have and realising that the commitment is an investment in the future of our profession.

Q: What advice would you give to members considering applying/nominating for an ABDO Board member position?

A: For those considering joining the ABDO Board, my advice is simple – go for it. Your unique experiences and perspectives are invaluable. Embrace the opportunity to be a voice for your colleagues, and don’t shy away from the chance to shape the direction of our profession.

Q: What makes being an ABDO Board member worthwhile?

It’s the sense of being part of something bigger, a collective effort to steer our profession toward excellence. The camaraderie with fellow Board members, the shared passion for optics and the knowledge that you’re contributing to positive change – that’s what makes every moment on the ABDO Board truly worthwhile.
