Vision Aid Overseas (VAO) has launched its summer challenge – Go for Glasses – and is appealing for support from the public and sector.
The charity is asking the public and optical practices to “get involved, get active and give the gift of glasses this summer”. Its fundraising target is £10,000 and participants can take part from now until 6 September.
The ‘do it yourself’ virtual challenge means participants can take part wherever they are and choose their activity, distance and fundraising target.
Suzana took part in the challenge last year. She explains why: “As a dispensing optician, I understand what it means to lose your sight. We are very lucky to have access to instant eyecare in the western world and I think it’s time to give the same opportunity to those born in developing countries. I was really inspired by the Go for Glasses challenge to keep fit and healthy whilst raising awareness for such a good cause.”
One of this year’s participants, Peter, has set himself a million-step challenge. He is taking part because: “I was born with a complex visual impairment. Thanks to the NHS, my vision has been improved by glasses since I was four and I am able to live a full and active life. Children in developing countries born with the same visual Impairment as me, are not so fortunate. I want to do something to help them have the same chance I had.”
